Bird Feeders are for the Birds!
Every manufacturer seems to assert they have an anti squirrel bird feeder or a squirrel proof feeder. Trial after trial of these feeders had me asking if that even possible. Envision the hour’s folks have spent in the pursuit of a way to keep squirrels out of bird feeder.
If you set the feeder where there are no squirrels or positioned just right than you might not see squirrels eating your prized birdseed. Some anti squirrel bird feeders only work with fully charged batteries, and rarely work in cold weather, while some worked until the squirrel figured out he can swing the feeder and knock all the seed to the ground.
Squirrels are very persistent and will go to every length to find food and Bat Removal. Through time I have observed every squirrel proof feeder ever produced together with hundreds of contraptions which never made it to the commercial industry. The materials and designs used for these feeders were vast.
The issue with most attempts to make an anti squirrel bird feeder is that if a squirrel can’t reach the food easily, then they are going to chew through it. Most wild animals will get bored after many tries to get food, but not squirrels!
One part of the solution is to come across a bird feeder made from metal that doesn’t have any ninety degree corners or sides to allow gum. Yes, squirrels can chew through metal, especially the thin metals utilized in most bird feeders. Besides the feeder closing up when a squirrel gets on it you also need the final mechanism sensitivity to be easily adjustable.
Making things worse is that if you let squirrels have their way with your feeders they’ll eventually chew holes in your soffiting, roof overhang, of your home or chew into your outside buildings and sheds to store their stash for later feeding and also to increase baby squirrels. Talk about a mess!!!
Another biological factor of squirrels, as well as mice and rabbits, is that they have to chew on things (wire, wood, metal, trees, even rocks) to grind teeth down. Unlike human adult teeth a squirrels teeth keep growing and will need to be continually ground down in order to drink and eat.
An anti squirrel bird feeder can be purchased, made at home with plenty of trial and error, or you could just change to safflower seed which the squirrels don’t like, yet all the songbirds adore.
